How many of the protestors at Columbia could offer even that context?
How many know of the 80 yr, very complex history of the region since the Balfour Declaration, since Arab powers rejected the partition? How many know that Hamas was elected once in ‘06, never stood for reelection again and simply seized control of the enclave? Terry Anderson may have been kidnapped by Hezbollah, but that’s a policy across the region for these like minded extremists.
How about just the context that protestors very much like them do get to say their piece in Israel, just like they do now. Imagine how many of them would still be breathing if they protested for, say, gay rights in the middle of Gaza city?
The land they want (or claim to) from the river to the sea would be literally the opposite of what they would call a virtuous state. The problem is, they think that country would be the right skin color, and their analysis stops there.
Historical context is absolutely missing from these protests. It would be an improvement if most of the protestors could make even only that distinction you just drew.
